The Dailies

When I was thinking about making the switch from conventional beauty to clean beauty, I did not consider at first that some of my daily hygiene products might also need to be replaced.  I had always accepted the toothpastes + deodorants at the drugstore as the standard, and did not even consider examining what goes into them.  Isn’t it amazing how often we do that in life?  We do not take the time to examine things for ourselves – we reach for the familiar or convenient, rather than a thoughtful choice.

‘The unexamined life is not worth living.’ – Socrates

A friend of mine gifted me with the Agent Nateur Deodorant for my birthday and I absolutely love it!  She purchased it from a cute boutique in Charleston (I hope to visit on my Charleston trip this weekend!!). I had read about AN, but I was clinging very tightly to my conventional anti-perspirant/deo + I was nervous about making the switch to natural.  This gift was the little encouragement that I needed and I am so happy to report that I LOVE this product!

I found the Dr. Bronner’s Toothpaste on a TJMaxx run and decided to give it a whirl.  A non-foaming toothpaste was something to get used to, but ultimately I found that I did not need the foam and I am happy to use a product that isn’t relying on synthetics to help me feel more clean.

If you haven’t taken time in a while to examine your daily routine, I urge you to spend a few minutes today to think about what is simply habit and should be replaced with intentional, thoughtful choices.

I have absolutely loved this new journey in blogging about Clean Beauty.  There are many names for this type of beauty products (green, organic, nontoxic, etc.), but they all point to an intentional choice for what you are putting on your face + body. I love being able to help women learn about these products and advising on the best ones to choose.

More than the products themselves, my passion lies in the conversation around beauty. As we are starting to make healthier choices in beauty, I want to see us to make healthier choices in how we view our own beauty.  Rather than looking at beauty products as a way to ‘fix’ or ‘change’ what you see in the mirror, I prefer this approach:  accentuate, enhance + nourish.

Accentuate your favorite features.

Enhance your beauty.

Nourish your skin + choose products that are good for you.

I also understand that making the switch to clean beauty can be a little daunting because it is hard to know where to start.  I have loved receiving questions from my readers and I thought that many of you may be having the same questions, so I will be posting some of them!

Question from Lauren C.:

‘For the past few months, I’ve really been interested in making the switch to clean skincare (or at least, “cleaner” than what I’m currently doing), but I have felt a little lost as to where to begin. I am so happy to have found your blog! Since reading your recommendations, I have purchased travel sizes of the One Love face wash, Wonder Balm and Micro Scrub. I am really loving these so far, but I want to ask what you recommend for SPF?’

Funny you should ask about SPF, I just purchased a new one!  I haven’t even had the chance to try it, but I found it at TJMaxx so I picked it up.  Here’s an Amazon link:  Hang 10 Face Sunscreen.  I also got the spray, but it’s only SPF 8:  Hang Ten Spray. They are made by my favorite natural sunscreen company, Coola.  But I have tried the target brand of Coola before and I wasn’t a fan.  So we will see.  But, I’m not opposed to returning it if I don’t like it!
As for the real thing and all-time favorite:  Coola Citrus Mimosa Spray.  It is just the best.  The formula isn’t too thick, it’s not greasy, it sprays well, and it has a light scent.  It protects well.  I love it and I splurge every OTHER summer on it 🙂  The bottle does last though, so I totally recommend it!! I really want this kit:  Coola Kit.  I also think this product is genius:  Coola Setting Spray.  If you are going to be wearing makeup, you just spray it on top of your makeup.  I have it and LOVE it.
This one I have tried:  Goddess Garden It was perfect for our vacation because it really protects.  I will say it is a little thicker than what I would like to wear by the pool for a couple of hours.  My husband loved it because he could get in the water and play and he didn’t burn at all.  We are big fans of spray formulas too, and it had a good sprayer 😉  Here’s the lotion formula:  Goddess Garden Lotion They also make a face sunscreen + makeup primer that looks cool:  Goddess Garden Face Sunscreen
Lastly, I also want to try this 100% Pure Sunscreen.  They also make a face stick.  My husband loves suncreen sticks for his face..makes it so easy!  These will probably be my next SPF!
Of course, I always use my fave True Natural Sunless Tanner  for a sun glow!

Mykonos wins the award for ‘Most Photogenic.’ I couldn’t stop snapping photos of the vibrant flowers that crawled up and hung from whitewashed architecture on every street. Every turn was just picture perfect.  Jonathan and I broke away from the group for this destination because we had one thing in mind:  BEACH.

In order to get from one side of Mykonos to the other, we decided to rent an ATV.  Well, actually, I probably would have chosen the pale yellow Vespa if it were up to me.  However, my husband likes to drive fast and a pumpkin orange ATV it was.  We had such a fun time zipping around the island and finding our way to a beach.

Greece has always been at the top of my #travelgoals.  I always wanted to see the hilly terrain that is covered in white and blue.  I also had goals that included feta, olives, and baklava.  Cuisine is a huge part of my love for that culture and everything we ate in Greece was so incredibly fresh + flavorful.

While in Athens, we had the chance to enjoy all of the flavors of Greece.  At lunch, the entire family (16 people) was seated at a long outdoor table, under the flowers and vines. We lingered at the red + white checkered table with the sounds of a man on a guitar, picking classic Greek sounds.  It was glorious.  Especially, after a toasty morning visit to the Parthenon and Mars Hill.

Roman Holiday

It’s time for a little peek into the Italian part of our trip to the Mediterranean!  You can see my other posts (Paris, Barcelona + Provence) for a little background on the early part of the trip and the inspiration for going.  The trip feels like an amazing dream and thanks to the Norwegian Cruise Lines Spirit ship, we were able to visit 10 cities in 6 different countries! (We tagged Paris on to the front end because…why not?)

Jonathan and I were excited to join our family for such an amazing experience and we were excited to get to revisit Italy.  We went to Italy just two years ago on our honeymoon.  On our honeymoon, we were there for two weeks and visited several spots including Florence, Tuscany, Cinque Terre and Venice.  The first 5 days were our absolute favorite part – they were spent in Sardinia, an island off of the coast of Italy!  In Sardinia, you can only get to the beaches by boat.  They were the most exquisite beaches I have ever seen – they felt very remote and each was unique from the others!  That was one of the most unforgettable times in my life – especially because Jonathan was the captain of our rented boat and I’m pretty sure he had never sailed the open seas before!

For this trip, the Spirit Ship took us to Rome, Florence, Naples + Venice (Venice, I am saving for a later post)!  It was my first time to Rome and I feel so grateful to have been able to walk the Colosseum, the Vatican + sit under the ceiling in the Sistine Chapel.  They are truly treasured memories.

The ship’s next stop was Livorno, which is the port to Florence.  I absolutely adore Florence.  On our honeymoon, Florence was the city that we had the best food.  We frequented the gelato shops, had incredible pizza + one of our favorite dinners ever.  The Pear + Gorgonzola Ravioli at La Giostra.  I don’t think I’ll ever forget it.  They pour champagne in your glass as they seat you and by the end of dinner, we were toasting limoncello with all of our new friends!  On this trip, we got to do something that we were so sad to miss the last time we were in Florence – seeing the David.  Absolutely a wonder.

We also took that day to visit the leaning tower of Pisa. Truthfully, it was so much cooler to experience in person than I had expected!  We went all the way to the top and your head starts to spin a little on those leaning steps!

The next stop was Naples and our group decided to spend the day in Pompeii + Capri. Pompeii is an ancient Roman city that was preserved under the volcanic ash of Mount Vesuvius.  It is certainly a must-see and I couldn’t get over the ingenuity + creativity that people had so long ago!  In the picture above, I am standing in front of  a wall + original paint from 79 AD.

We spent the second half of the day in Capri and I will tell you – this town solidified my love for Italy.  Capri was an absolute dream.  I loved everything about it.  We pulled up by ferry and the view of the town against the emerald water made my heart beat faster!  We dined in an open air spot, overlooking Capri and the ocean, and then spent the rest of the day walking and shopping.  Capri, I will return!

Here’s a photo of our entire group overlooking Tuscan scenery.

Custom. Skincare.

How fancy is that?

I can already start to feel the change in weather in Georgia.  Don’t get me wrong.  It is still incredibly hot and the humidity makes it hard to take a deep breath.  But soon there will be a shift in the air and with the change in seasons, comes a need for a change in skincare.

Enter custom skincare with Radiant Essentials. The brilliance of a custom skincare line is that it can be tailored to fit your individual needs + change as often as the seasons. Radiant Essentials is unique because all of the products are made fresh when you order them.  Each product is made with an organic, all natural base and a custom essential oil blend.  I first ordered the Facial Cleanser for dry skin about 9 months ago and I just love how it perfectly balances my oily/dry combo type skin.

P1020095 (1).jpg

I also ordered the Eye Jelly and it has become an essential part of my morning routine.  The Eye Jelly moisturizes with aloe and wakes up my tired eyes.  It has a cooling effect that soothes my puffiness when I haven’t had enough sleep.  I also think it gives my undereye concealer a little extra glow!

Radiant Essentials products are created by a mother (nutritionist) – daughter (cosmetologist) team that is passionate about creating quality products that are good for you too.

They also just started making men’s products… I see a Rugged Essentials gift in my husband’s future 😉

A day in the south of France.  It was every bit as dreamy as I’d hoped.

Provence was our first stop on our Mediterranean cruise (which I explained a little more about here).  Jonathan and I split off from our large group because we had our hearts set on rosé wine tasting, in the area that is know for some of best rosé in the world!  Before we left, I asked for vineyard recommendations from my favorite wine shop in Atlanta, Perrine’s Wine Shop.  Perrine gave some amazing recommendations and we selected Minuty.  Let’s just say..I hope I get to go back again some day.

One of Jonathan’s favorite things to do when we travel is to rent a car and experience a destination by navigating on our own.  We scooped up a sky blue Fiat and hit the road to the countryside of France.  The drive was exhilarating – we had the windows down and switched radio stations between local French music and American hits.  Thank you, Justin Timberlake, for setting our soundtrack with ‘Can’t stop the feeling!’

We navigated our way to Minuty and got so excited as we drove down the dirt driveway that was lined with tall pink + white flowering bushes.  I couldn’t help but admire the modern update on a classic French chateau when we pulled up!  I snapped a photo and we walked inside to find a gorgeous modern tasting room.  We were greeted by Emilie (who we came to love!) and she suggested that we take a walk around the grounds before starting our tasting.  The vines were absolutely gorgeous and it makes my heart beat faster to just recall the chapel + chateau that we happened upon.

IMG_2265 (1)

After strolling around the property, we ended back inside the tasting room to sip some of the most delicious (and prettiest!) rosé we’ve ever had.  We had the room and Emilie all to ourselves, so we just took our time + chatted with Emilie about the Provencal way. It was a delight.  We chose a rosé to bring back with us and Emilie directed us to the perfect spot for lunch in St. Tropez.

St. Tropez is on the French Riviera and was made famous by stars like Brigitte Bardot in the fifties.  It remains a classic luxury destination!  Jonathan and I were puzzled as we followed Emilie’s directions, which took us down an unassuming stretch of dirt road.  We finally pulled up to a parking attendant at the Plage de Pampelonne (Pampelonne Beach) and we were still unsure as to what we would find because the dirt parking lot was filled with exotic luxury cars.  We parked our sky blue Fiat in between the Maseratis and Porsches, and made our way to a wooden board walk. The boardwalk felt like it transported us, as we soon stood in front of stunning turquoise water + a posh beachside restaurant.  Everyone was having rosé bottle service delivered to their tables, overlooking a beach clad with colorful umbrellas. It was like nothing I had ever seen – it was so attractive and exciting! Jonathan and I had the best time having lunch and taking it all in.

We soon had to hop back into our sky blue Fiat and make it back to our ship.  Everyone always asks me what my favorite stop was on our trip and there is no way I could ever pick a favorite – but this was one of my favorite days ever.

Au revoir, Provence!  We will be back!

xoxo, Lauren

Au Naturale in Barcelona

FullSizeRender (1)

Glow is kind of my thing.

It is my specialty when I am doing makeup on someone.  Some artists focus on eyes, or contouring, or lipcolor.  I like to focus on the skin.  Skin is like my canvas and I love the look of glowy, healthy skin.

I absolutely love the Au Naturale Organic Creme Highlighter Stick in Rosegold.  It is 100% natural and it’s a great product.  I actually recommend it more as a blusher, than a highlighter.  When you apply the stick directly to your cheekbone, it produces a nice amount of color.  It is a warm rosegold with a luminous finish.

I apply the stick in a circular motion along my cheekbone, and use my fingers to blend it in.  I dab my fingers on the stick a couple of more times and use the product on my fingers to lightly highlight the tops of my cheeks, bridge of my nose and brow bones.  My general rule of thumb for highlighting is to imagine the parts of your face that the light would hit, if you were to shine a flashlight from above.  Those parts where light naturally hits are where you can apply highlighter.

Au Naturale Organic Creme Highlighter Stick in Rosegold provides a nice highlight that isn’t sparkly or too shiny.  The color is nice too and I feel like it would complement most any skin tone. The more you apply, the deeper the color.

It is super quick + easy to use!  The Highlighter Stick has a nice staying power too, which is why I chose to wear the product when traveling!

If you have been following me on Instagram, you may have noticed that I hopped around to quite a few countries this summer.  I have been putting together some posts to share about my travels, for any of your upcoming trip planning needs!  I recommend making a GoogleDoc for travel ideas and saving anything that you may want to add to your travel itinerary.  When you begin to plan your trip, you already have a bank of recommended ideas!  It also makes it easy to share with friends!

A little backstory – about a year ago, my husband’s family mentioned that they wanted to plan a big trip for our Grandmother’s 75th Birthday.  We knew that the trip would involve the city of Barcelona because our Grandmother has always wanted to visit that city.  We decided on a 12-day Mediterranean cruise, which departed from Barcelona and ended in Venice.  Jonathan and I chose to spend a few days in Paris before meeting up with (all 16!) family members in Barcelona. Since Barcelona was one of the highlights of the trip, we all spent a couple of days exploring the city before our ship left.

We stayed in this incredible Barcelona Homeaway and I have to say – it was even better in person than the photos on the website! We loved dining on the rooftop terrace and the entire place was just gorgeous –  the tiled floors and intricate ceilings were luxurious! The location was excellent and we walked + taxied to most places.

Gaudi’s architecture was, by far, the highlight of our time in Barcelona.  Sagrada Familia is a must-see for those of you with wanderlust.  Park Guell was another favorite destination – filled with Gaudi’s unique style of architecture and city views that stretched to the ocean!

El Nacional was my favorite dining experience in Barcelona.  The design was one of the best I’ve ever seen and I loved the different menu choices! We chose La Taperia for a traditional tapas experience.  Some of the items were made to order and some items were brought to the table + offered to you.  El Nacional has made the list of my all-time favorite restaurants!

While we were in Barcelona, the city was holding a huge holiday to celebrate Saint John the Baptist.  The last night we were there, Barcelona was in full force with fireworks + celebration.  This made walking on the beach, where everyone + their kids were setting off their own fireworks, a little scary – but also made for an exciting last evening in Barcelona! As we went out for Nomad Coffee the next morning, Jonathan + I were disappointed to find that it was closed for the holiday, along with most other businesses.  We happened upon Casa Lolea for coffee and delicious brunch – we were not disappointed!  We purchased two bottles (mostly because of the packaging!) of their ‘famous sangria,’ which we enjoyed later on the trip.  I was so happy to have noticed Lolea Sangria at Whole Foods this week – we have such fond memories with that distinctive bottle!

Beautiful Brushes

I was going to avoid the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale.  Truly.  I was.

And then these brushes happened to me.

They are the most beautiful makeup brushes I have ever seen.  Clear handles, gorgeous silver hardware and amazing bristles.  Not to mention the nude carrying case with a jeweled clasp.

One of my favorite things about makeup is that it is an artform.  When I am getting ready, I try to find beauty in the process – rather than focusing on what I want to change about how I look.

{My approach to skincare + beauty: accentuate, enhance + nourish. }

Some days, getting ready is just a chore.  Other days, I take those few minutes to enjoy being a woman.  Beautiful tools and products that are good for me are part of what I love about the process.  I top it all off with spritzing on something that smells delicious from a dainty, beautiful bottle and I’m ready for what lies ahead!

These Trish McEvoy Brushes are available in this set, only through the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale (ends August 7th).  I have also linked the brushes individually from Amazon, below!  They are the MOST beautiful.
